Editing Victory Conditions
I didn't get that with Medieval II, which just felt like the original Rome's map with updated graphics. Rome II's is also much, much larger, another plus. Land Battle Gameplay: Surprisingly similar between the two. Rome II has units which use phalanxes, which give an edge if you're playing defensively, but besides that they mostly fight the same. Each faction in RTW has it's set of victory conditions for both a long and a short campaign. This article will show you how to change these.
Victory conditions are described in RTWdataworldmapscampaignimperial_campaigndescr_win_conditions.txt. A typical entry in this file will look like this:
As you may already have noticed each entry is made up of three parts: first comes the faction name, then the victory conditions for a long campaign, then the victory conditions for a short campaign, which are marked in the file with short_campaign.
Note that is not necessary to have a set of short campaign victory conditions. It is however best to have them as it gives more choice to anyone playing you mod.
There are several types of victory conditions you can use. These can be used for both the long and the short campaign. I will now explain the different victory conditions available and what they mean.
take_rome
The standard for all factions. It means that the faction must have 50 regions, including Rome, to win the campaign.

imperator
This is exactly the same as take_rome.

outlive_factions
The name of this is a bit deceptive. It doesn't just mean the faction has to destroy or outlast the factions specified on the next line. The faction must also have at least fifteen provinces under it's control. You can specify more than one faction that has to be destroyed by separating their names with a space.

take_regions #
Replace # with a number you like. Requires the faction to be in control of at least # provinces. This can be used together with hold_regions which is explained below.

hold_regions <names>
This requires the faction to control the regions listed after this. Multiple regions can be used by separating their names with a space. You must use the internal name of a region. This can be found in RTWdatatextimperial_campaign_regions_and_settlement_names.txt. The name you need is the one inside curly brackets on the left.

The only conditions that can be used together are hold_regions and take_regions. Combining any of the other conditions with another condition results in only the objective you placed first showing up. When using hold_regions and take_regions together it doesn't matter which one you put first.
